They came home, they are, they listened to the radio, they went to bed. It takes place in an undisclosed Spanish speaking country. Soccer defines his life, as it does for many young boys in Latin America. Pedro just wants to real soccer ball, not this silly one with blue dots on it. Set in Latin America, young Pedro and his friends witness fathers being taken away by soldiers.
Daniel tells Pedro that his father is against the dictatorship, which is the reason why soldiers forced his father to leave.

Jan 15, Comosicion Smith rated it really liked it Shelves: As a teacher, I could see this book prompting an interesting discussion about the efficacy of lying and about the power of writing to make a difference in the world. Pedro asks his friend why his father was taken and is told that it is because his father is lw the dictatorship. I just wish that more kids were as clever as Pedro.
He ends up writing a story about playing soccer with his friends then coming home and playing chess with his parents. It could be used to foster discussion about different forms of government and how they compare to a democracy.
When asked, bribed even, to report his own parents’ activities, he must make a difficult moral decision. Published March 5th by Groundwood Books first published March 1st This is a well written children’s book which can be used with upper level students. Illustrations of the bust stop when Pedro waits for his father, composiciin hole in an eraser on the desk, and a bullet hole on the anyonio wall could be examples. When the police come to his classroom and ask the children to write an essay about what their parents do every night, Pedro must decide what to do.
Along with the texts, illustrations tell readers much information about time period and geographical details. Perfect for a writing activity – ask students to draft their own compositions. One day at school, a captain from the army comes into class and tells the kids to write an essay complsicion what they do at night. I think this story could truly speak to many students despite the smarmeta circumstances and lifestyle. I think this is the kind of book that would be a great window for students to see another kind of culture.

But when the soldiers come and take his friend Daniel’s father away, things suddenly become much more complicated. I’m not sure my students would understand the impact of this book until we had a discussion after reading the story.

Pedro does not win the prize commposicion brings home his composition one day. Instead, he makes up a lie about his parents playing chess each night. Pedro, nine, compoosicion very good at soccer, has an easy life, goes to school, does his homework, wishes he had a real soccer ball rather than the cheaper one he owns.
The text and dialogue is straightforward, written with a crisp, accessible tone.
